Getting students to learn quotes for Macbeth and Jekyll & Hyde is hard, but they’ll need them for their English Literature Exam.
I’ve made these flashcards and will be using them in lessons with both years 10 and 11 – as well as giving year 11 a set to print themselves to revise for mocks.
On the front of the card is the quote, on the back is three bits of information:
- M: what the quote means
- T: what techniques have been used
- R: how it relates to life at the time the novel / play was written
I’ve purposefully muddled up both texts as students need to start thinking of them together (particularly in year 11) as they’re in the same exam.

How I use these in lessons:
I give students one each (saving loads of printing and cutting out), they move around the room testing each person they meet and then swapping cards. In round one, they test each other on the quotes, in round two on techniques they use, and in round three on how they relate to the context. They then write a paragraph using one of the quotes they’ve learnt.
What are you doing to help your students learn quotes for the new spec exams?
