Macbeth Context Revision – Free lesson and handout download

Considering the impact of context on a novel, play or poem is something students find difficult.

Even if their language analysis is good, they can struggle to link the meaning to the time the text was written. Sometimes if they do it’s simplistic or misinformed.

This is a challenging skill because you’ve got to leave the perception that characters are just created and consider how they are the product of people and events.

This is a lesson I planned for year 11 after an exam paper in which many didn’t link to the context effectively.

It goes through various (very simplified) historical facts about the context of Macbeth which students then link to quotes from the play.

How do you teach context to your students?

Do your students have difficulty doing this? How do you approach it?
