The Healthy Teacher Project 8 – Interview with Charlotte

What is The Healthy Teacher Project?

Charlotte is an English teacher at a comprehensive secondary school in the Cotswolds where she’s taught for five years. She’s now the Associate Head of English.

We talk about how Charlotte has recently made more of an effort to keep physically fit and how that investment in her health has helped relieve stress. We also talked about how being surrounded by a great team is important and how talking about your stressors and wellbeing is essential.

Listen to my conversation with Charlotte here:

Charlotte’s top tips:

A supportive team is essential

“I’ve been very lucky with the people I work with – everyone is completely on board. If you try new things they go along with it and if you need help they’ll give you support. It’s important being somewhere you’ve got people to rely on.”

Know that wellbeing can affect everyone

“In our team we’ve had someone go off with long-term stress… it has affected us all because it has brought things to light. People are now openly talking about their stresses and the things we’re struggling with.”

There’s always something more to do

“There’s always something more you feel like you should be doing – there’s not enough time to do everything and that affects your physical health. This year I’ve made a pact with myself to be more physically fit. I’ve forced myself to make time – but once you start doing that it becomes easier because it feels addictive.”

Keeping physically healthy helps relieve stress

“Before, if I had a stressful day I’d eat ice cream and have a glass of wine, but now I’m more likely to go to the gym or go for a run. That helps me physically work things out as by the time I’ve exercised I already feel better.”

Could these things make you happier and healthier?
